My big ones would be Ghost Trick & both TWEWY games. For the TWEWY games, the way the conflict resolves ties in very nicely with the personal struggles each protag had, with Neku needing to "trust his partner" one last time after 3 weeks worth of plot twists & being the puppet for both sides of the conflict & Rindo being forced to make the decision of whether to go for high risk for a high reward after spending the whole game dealing with his crippling decision paralysis (for context the first thing you do in Neo TWEWY is choose whether to have curry or ramen & HE ACTIVELY WEIGHS THE PROS & CONS IN HIS HEAD WHILE BEING INDECISIVE. OVER LUNCH). As for Ghost Trick, well that's hard to explain without accidentally spoiling but OH MY FUCKING GOD THE WAY IT ENDS. Just play all three games.

Haven't yet played most of the games, but of the two I have played, 6 is MILES better than 8. The best part of the day night cycle in my opinion is when it turns 3 of the minigames upside down: In What Goes Up..., you have to jump the highest in the daytime, but fall the fastest at night. In Conveyor Bolt, you have one player riding the cloud car and the other 3 on the conveyor belt during the day, while it's 3 cloud cars and 1 on the conveyor belt at night. And in Mole-It!, the pipes are at the top during the day and on the bottom at night.

That top 5 is kinda trash in my opinion 1. GTA IV 2. GTA SA 3. GTA V 4. GTA Vice City 5. GTA III

In Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem you have a variety of fake game overs. From a room with an absurd amount of enemies where the game suddenly claims your controller is unplugged so you can only see your character dying, to full screen that reads "To be continued in Sanity's Redemption", to your character's head exploding when casting a spell! All followed by a flash of light and your character screaming "This can't be happening!" Some absolutely brilliant messing with the player in that game

I’m probably not the only one who thinks Rudder Madness and Cointagous aren’t that bad. I actually like them and with Cointagous; it isn’t luck-based, you just gotta hit your dice at the right moment and no matter what you’ll get at least more then 1 coin

Persona 5. if you know you know. What's fun is that if you mess up a choice beforehand it's an ACTUAL game over, and in the game's original release they offered you a save between the choice and the consequences. Quite a few people screwed themselves over because of it lol.

The secret of monkey island! It's got one of the most iconic fake game overs, maybe even the first of them all! You played the game for quite a while and then you get to that cliffside. You walk around a little only to suddenly have the floor collapse under you. You get a 'game over' message which is quite the shocker, since there was no failure state up to this point. Then guybrush suddenly flies back up, because a 'rubber tree' was conveniently placed under him, and catapulted him back up. You later use that rubber tree to catapult some rock. And you're telling me this is not even top 5 material??

I don’t agree with the notion that the series is confusing. There’s unanswered questions and ambiguity, sure, but most games have that anyway. There’s a story that’s not done being told, so we naturally will just need to accept that there’s not total knowledge about everything.

TECHNICALLY “you win” is a game over condition. So how about the second quest in Legend of Zelda? Or maybe the “Ghosts n’ Goblins” franchise where a good number of titles force the player to complete the game twice (and pick up the right items on the second run)?

I actually had the Scarecrow's fear gas fuck with my dreams. I would notice it appearing, register what it would be, and be powerless to stop it fucking up my dreams...Twice maybe. One time it even caused everything in my dream to glitch out and unload, like in a video game. Other times I died, but was still conscious, able to still do so. For a lucid dreamer, that's as close to a real life "Fission Mailed" as you can get

My favorite goes to The Secret of Monkey Island, where you have to walk near the edge of a cliff at a certain direction. You end up falling, and the game basically says, “Hope you saved your progress, because you dun goofed!” But then Guybrush literally bounces OVER the “game over” screen and just says, “Rubber tree.” iirc, this was one of the ways the devs were poking fun of how frustratingly hard the King’s Quests games were, and I love it!!!

Honestly the wind temple is still the best for me. Not only was the build up insane but the bossfight was great if you dont cheese it. Plus the music was the best

my favorite fake game over (That technically counts, if you squint) comes from Control. Right after what is arguably the best section of the game, you come across the Hedron, the object that is the source of the equipment that is protecting people from the thing that is turning people into the monsters you are fighting. The Hedron is also the entity that has been helping the protagonist, Jesse Faden, for the last several years. After a sequence where you work to protect The Hedron from enemies, it breaks and Jesse succumbs to the effects. The game goes so far as to roll credits before they begin to get distorted until you are back in control of Jesse and she gets some character growth and go through the finale.

I personally think the absolute peak of fake game overs came from Bravely Default 2. The Bravely series has done all kinds of tricks with the title screen, save data, game mechanics and so on, and Bravely Second did a pretty impressive one with putting the game in a fail state that unlocks New Game + and allows you to break continuity by activating a mechanic in the hopeless boss fight during the intro, which you didn't have on the first go, and change the entire course of the game for the second go around. Bravely Default 2, however, has you hit two separate bad endings as game overs and then continue with the reveal that that's a premonition from the book you save your game data in and you can't do things the way you were planning because it'll kill one of your party and emotionally devastate the rest - only to proceed by *allowing you to delete the villain's previously hidden save file and erase the soul jar they've been using to instantly recover from your defeating them*. And then you go on to kick their ass properly without their backup.

My favorite fake game over is from one of the Hitman games(I forget which) where you're at Agent 47's funeral but he isn't actually dead just under the effects of a drug that puts him in a near-death like state.

I'm Surprised conquer's bad fur day didn't make the list. The first time you die in that game You go and meet the grim reaper and then he tells you you get extra chances cause you're a special case.

Pffft! Okay, that Futurama game over is actually pretty funny. Such an obvious death trap and it's what you're SUPPOSED to do!? Priceless! XD Side note, I was just mentioning earlier today in a convo I had with someone about Death Stranding and how "They should just make a Futurama game, at least then I'd be fine being a delivery boy for 40+ hours" and I am just now learning that there is, indeed, a Futurama game...from the PS2/Xbox era...because ofc that was a thing, that was the generation where anything and everything with a license could become a game... I...don't even know why I was surprised with this knowledge, to be perfectly honest with you... O.o
